Maverick at Cedar PointIt’s rumor time again. The Coaster Capital (that’s technically no longer the capital), is not only opening without a new coaster for 2012, but it’s also removing one before opening. Last week, the park announced WildCat’s swift closure and demolition. The park explained that the ride was being removed to make way for the expansion of the Celebration Plaza area.

Of course, this kind of move is going to stir up the roller coaster rumor mill. But what do you build in a theme park that has everything? With 16 roller coasters they’ve got many of the major ride types covered. They’ve got woodies, an inverted coaster, a suspended coaster, three launch coasters, two kiddie coasters, a twin racing coaster, a mine train coaster, a bobsled coaster, a stand-up coaster, a hyper coaster, a giga coaster, a shuttle coaster, and an old-school looper.

The latest rumor from Screamscape references green B&M track that’s been spotted at the Ohio plant. The popular thinking is that Cedar Point could be looking to add a Wing Coaster like Wild Eagle and X-Flight. I’d be fine with that, but I’d really rather seem them give Mean Streak the Rocky Mountain topper track before they build anything new. In my opinion, woodies are a big hole in Cedar Point’s vast lineup.

  1. A pre-fab would be a great wooden coaster and counts as a new ride.

  2. It would actually be pretty interesting to see them replace Mean Streak with a new Gravity Group woodie.

I think the world needs another 4th dimension coaster!

  4. All they need is a winged!

  5. I think they need a GCI woodie. They have only 2 actual wooden coasters, and 1's old, they other is Hell. They need to support their coaster collection with a New Age Woodie.

  6. I voted for another height record breaker so long as it is new and not just a taller TTD. Perhaps go back to the height and speed coming with a long track length (Millennium) or at least something new to the first drop. Maybe straight down 90 degrees 500 feet with no twist?

  7. Whatever it is (if it is), they've probably already started making track for it, wherever that factory is (B&M factory or elsewhere for another manufacturer).

I agree about the Rocky Mtn. remake of Mean Streak but I doubt they will do that.

  8. Cedar point does lack in wooden rollercoasters, and the ones they have in place are not that very good. But they might fear away from woodies as long as the Son of Beast incident at kings island still haunts them… I would love to see a intanim made prefab woodie designed by Werner Stengel to be built where meanstreak currently stands.

  9. I completely agree. A new age woodie of any kind would really be a boost to CP's lineup.

  10. I wonder if the issues that Magic Mountain had with X have kept Cedar Point away from this type of ride. I'm not sure if X2 has had fewer issues so that may not be a factor any more. Plus, they could do a compact 4D coaster like Green Lantern, but ride capacity's probably pretty low for that ride.

  11. I'm supprised no one has mentioned a new dueling coaster. Or, a new indoor rollercoaster; Disaster Transport is in need of a replacement or huge renivation.

  12. I think Cedar Point should go for Intamins new 12 iversion coaster. This would give the park another record breaker, and would give it a really good looping coaster, one of the only things Cedar point lacks.

  13. As an annual Cedar Point visitor, I have noticed that, understandably, most people HATE Mean Streak. So, if the were to give it the New Texas Giant treatment, I feel almost as if the would have to completely re-theme it and re-name in order to get the hype and excitement they would be hoping for.

  14. I think they need a big B&M looper of any kind, whether it's a wing, floorless, doesn't matter as long as there are a good amount of inversions. Other than Raptor, Mantis, and somewhat Corkscrew and Maverick, CP is mostly devoid of inversions. If they could find a way to get a flyer doing a dive out over the lake I'd be down for that as well.

  15. A great B&M looper would be what I wish Cedar Point would get but I think they will be getting a wing coaster due to it being a newer design.

Refurbished or completely new woodie. Also, it would bw great to see a crazy Gravity Group racer like in Happey Valley in China. When comparing CP with other parks, it always loses on woodies for me.

  17. I would really like to see an intamin prefabrication woodie. They need an up to date wooden coaster, which should offer some great airtime. I definitely think a woodie is in order though, as a steel wouldn't be unique. I don't want to see a winged coaster because there have been so many coming out, and I have CP on a higher pedastal than most parks

  18. First of all, can we all agree CP will be adding a kiddie coaster along with their new big coaster? Secondly, a few pieces of green winged coaster tracks were spotted outside a B&M plant. Could this possibly be for CP 2013? Personally, I think that the Point should try a coaster that is part dark ride, part outdoor with a story line.

  19. Well I think you are right. The thing CP really needs to improve among other things is their Kiddie area. They need to get it up to par with Kings Island, another Cedar Fair park.

  20. Whatever they're building, it has to be big. The Point hasn't added a new coaster since Maverick in 2007. They're so low on space that I don't think they'll add a coaster with a huge layout. So as much as I'd love to see a wooden coaster added to the park, I don't know how likely that actually is (unless it's very compact, or they remove existing rides.) I'll keep my hopes up though.

  21. I agree that they should add a new smooth woodie. You have an old and not very thrilling Blue Streak, and an extremely painful Mean Streak. I believe a good woodie is just what the park needs

yeah, the new texas giant looks like a really "sexy" coaster, they used a lot of the same supports, and turned from what i hear was a crap ride into an insanely fun ride (never rode it, going by povs and reviews :P) and i'm sure they could turn mean streak into the an AMAZING ride 😛

i'll throw it out there that the only reason that Cedar Point was considered the "coaster capitol" is because they come out with everything first, half their roller coasters WERE record breakers, but now most of them are sub par to other parks, and i wont even begin on canada's wonderland, but now that Cedar Fair is in ownership and we have behemoth and now leviathan, I have high hopes for my home park

  24. Cedar point has it all… but they are missing a flying coaster like Superman @ Six flags. Also they need a 4th dimension… it would really add to the collage of coasters they have there. Another height breaker would cost the park alot of money and there would not be a new ride for quite some time… and if they really wanted to do that, then just make Top thrill taller… extend to it. no need to build a whole new other thing.

  25. I go wild for launching coasters and thrilling first drop coasters. I'm not too big a fan of woodies nor coasters with inversions, they just dont do anything for me. Except for Maverick, my #1 of all time! Anything Cedar Point hasnt done before would satisfy me really. A 4 dimensional, wing coaster, a flying coster etc. Cedar Point is usually the only the only park I travel to so I would love if Cedar Point would add one of these so I'm not tempted to fly out to SFMM next year to try something new! Though my loyalty is forever with the Point!

  26. When it comes to steel coasters, Cedar Point pretty much has everywhere covered except for a flyer or a 4th dimension. With that said, it really is lacking in the wooden department. While Blue Streak proved to be a pleasant surprise, Mean Streak was horrible, El Toro is by far the best wooden coaster I've been on, and the Point could really use an Intamin Pre-Fab. Maybe they could even make it a record breaker and market it as the tallest wooden coaster in the world since Son of Beast seems likely to be removed. If any manufacturer could pull off a 200ft woodie I'd put my money on Intamin. El Toro is insanely smooth for a wooden coaster, and in its 7th year of operation its holding up very well.

  27. I'm thinking a flying coaster. They still don't have one, and they're very fun.

  28. As a thrill seeker, I need something fast. Height would be good, but i think speed is the most thrilling. So to satisfy both parties, how about a renovation or totally new wood coaster where Mean Streak is, then tear down disaster transport, the carnival games in that area, and extend the park into the present day parking lot. This could make room for a new fast launch coaster, or a winged coaster. Also, this coaster would have to look really cool so it could give park visitors a good first thing to see as they walk in the park. Perhaps a cool new color, maybe a neon purple, or a sharp orange.

  29. While it'll likely be a Wing Rider, all but the 500ft tall coaster and the water coaster sound fantastic, Mean Streak could use the 'Iron Horse' treatment from all of the reviews that I've read about the ride, the 4th Dimension coaster would be pretty big news and the GCI woodie would also be a fantastic choice. While I'd like to see another ACTUAL 4D coaster in the US, any of the choices aside from the two that i don't like would be a great addition to Cedar Point's lineup.

  30. I think Cedar Point's next roller coaster should be this red flying roller coaster that's been rumored to come. I would right that coaster no matter how long I'd have to wait for it 🙂

  31. Well, I guess I'll leave one more comment just because I can 😉

As for the future when it comes to wooden rides, I think the wooden coaster that should go at Cedar Point would be Mean Streak. Yes, I enjoy Mean Streak, but in all honesty, Mean Streak has become kind of a bore. Despite the ride being tall and all, I don't get much of a thrill from the ride. Unfortunately, age has made the ride slower and not too much of a challenge. The usually small line is an indication of that as well with other riders.

If Cedar Point can think of a new and more exciting wooden roller coaster, then definitely, a new one should go where Mean Streak is.

Blue Streak, on the other hand, should never EVER go. Why? Because 1: it's the oldest operating coaster at the park, 2: despite how small it is, you can still get a thrill off of that old little thing, and 3: that's what kept the park going in 1964. Our precious Cedar Point could have disappeared without that attraction in 1964 (at least according to what I've read and how I've interpreted it). Blue Streak should always stay and keep on being maintained for as long as possible in my opinion.

  32. 4th dimensions seem to have been replaced by the winged flyers. X2 is amazing when it's smooth, but it seriously rage dolls you some times. I haven't been to Asia to ride the new one, but I understand why a park doesn't want to take a chance on one. X put Arrow Dynamics out of business.

A flyer would be terrific if they put it where Iron Dragon is. They could use the lagoons. Hell they could even keep the name and give it a Dragon theme.

I'd still prefer a prefab woodie. Cedar Point is the kid who has all of the toys. Along the beach would be great. I rode Mean Streak during a trip home to Ohio earlier this summer and it was much smoother than it has been in years.

  33. Cedar Fair did not build Son of Beast, they only tried to correct the problems that Paramount made.

  34. The parking lot is out of the question. During extremely busy days and Halloweekends, it is not uncommon for the lot to be completely full and customers need to park beyond the toll gates on the grassy area by the Causeway. CP won't be sacrificing parking anytime soon.

  35. They should just redo the top part of TTD to make it 500 feet tall.

  36. It is a Wing Coaster called Gatekeeper
